The taverns and inns are abuzz with rumors that an artifact of great power has been stolen from a wealthy merchant here in Haven. Even the local thieves’ guild has been sacked in the search for the item and no treasure trove has been left unturned within the city limits. As ships arrive in port more tales emerge that two other artifacts are missing – one in the kingdom to the north and another in the south. One common thread among the rumors claims that an ancient, long dead wizard is behind the caper, perhaps the ghost of the Wizard King himself. Speculation on the items in question abounds and no two are the same.
Agents for the victim Riikan Dax, a wealthy merchant in Haven, have been trolling the taverns and adventurers guild looking for stalwart and trustworthy adventurers willing to take on a dangerous recovery mission. Riikan Dax is an extremely wealthy merchant who commands a fleet of merchant ships based in Neverwinter. His fleet is the fastest and most profitable in the region. He wants his treasure back and will spare no expense to get it.
Your individual reputations have earned them an audience with Riikan in his lavish and well-guarded estate overlooking the bay. He explains that a valuable trident has been stolen from his (formerly) impenetrable vault. The only clue to the perpetrator is a note left in its place. It reads:
Search ye far or search ye near,
You’ll find no trace of the three
Unless you follow instructions clear,
For the weapons abide with me.
North past forest, farm, and furrow
You must go to reach the feathered mound.
Then down away from the sun you’ll burrow—
Forget life, forget light, forget sound.
To rescue Wave, you must do battle
With the Beast in the Boiling Bubble.
Crost cavern vast, where chain-links rattle
Lies Whelm, past waterspouts double.
Blackrazor yet remains to be won
Underneath inverted ziggurat.
That garnered, think not that you’re done,
For now you’ll find you are caught.
I care not, former owners brave,
What heroes you seek to hire.
Though mighty, each shall be my slave
Or vanish into the fire.
His scribes have concluded that the “feathered mound” in the note refers to White Plume Mountain, far to the east in a remote region. The ‘K’ is believed to refer to the ancient wizard Keraptis who was presumed dead some 300 years ago.
He offers a reward of 10,000 gp to your party for the return of his treasure, Wave – he cares nothing for the fate of the other objects mentioned in the note or any treasures you may find there.
